You’re not off on this. I got out before GWOT so my worst struggles were pre war. Despite having a SOF background, a college education, a pilots license and a good working knowledge of Spanish I couldn’t find a real job. I spent 8 years of my life working in the bar business. Breaking up fights for 10 dollars an hour. Fucking bullshit. That period of my life was the worst. GWOT kicks off and then I (we) have purpose. Purpose is the biggest struggle to find. Now the GWOT is largely over the struggle continues to find purpose. I am very fortunate I have found one and I hope you all can too. Doesnt have to be fancy, rescuing dogs is a purpose. Mentoring troubled teens is a purpose. Just going to work everyday and not choking people who deserve it is purpose, lol. Love this group…

Dude pulls out a pistol for “show and tell.” I’m like “hey man, maybe not here.” Another guy starts flagging people and the owner assured me that the Gun is unloaded. I told him I’ve seen better men than me lose their jobs for less than that not including the number of people I’ve MEDEVACd for ND/ADs. We’re all trying to fit in with a society I wouldn’t trust to mow my fucking grass. Why can’t I just win the goddam lottery…?

Quitting drinking was the best and smartest thing I ever did n my life. How many good dudes lost their job (or worse) because they went too far. Every single person Ive known over the last 20 years that has decided to leave us early was on lots of meds (usually from VA) but it started with the booze.
