I’ve thought about this a lot. If I’m picking up what you’re putting down I get it. You can never be told that you did it right when your training to be perfect. Did anyone ever come up to you while you were in and say: “That was so awesome, you did perfectly, good job Marine, congratulations you are the shit!”? Hell no. No one has ever uttered those words in the history of the Marine Corps. If you don’t think you suck, you’ll never be amazing. And the more you think that you need to catch, up the better you’ll be than them. It’s the only way it really works. That being said, a few years ago I learned that I could reach across and pat myself on the back and say “Well done. You did good. You are actually kind of a bad ass.” It is not arrogance. It is objective truth. And you can give yourself that pat on the back because it’s true. Because no one from the Marine Corps is going to chase you down and do it. I highly recommend it.
